Wet wipes containing plastic will be banned in England under plans to tackle water pollution.
The ban on plastic-based wipes should come into force in the next year following a consultation. It is part of a wider plan to improve water quality in England, where no river or waterway is considered clean. Wet wipes flushed down toilets cause 93% of sewer blockages including so-called fatbergs and cost around £100m a year to clear up, according to Water UK which represents the water industry. I joined BBC Radio 5 Live with presenters Rachel Burden and Rick Edwards to discuss the topic. |
The UK Government released its revised Net Zero plans after previous ones fell short of their climate targets. This was a deluge of information all on one day covering topics from energy, finance, travel, and more. Hear my thoughts as I discuss with Stephen Nolan from BBC Radio 5 Live.

Quoted in BBC News:
Environmental activist Laura Young said she had looked into the product and thought the Project Harmless bags were the most sustainable on the market. "Brands of dog poo bags that are compostable or biodegradable in one way are better than plastic bags because they don't use fossil fuel products," she said. "However, these bags need really specific conditions to breakdown as intended. "In theory they (the other bags) should work but in practice they're not quite there." |
Great to speak with Colin Murray from BBC Radio 5 Live after day 1 of COP27 in Egypt.
This conversation was refreshing, as presenter Colin wanted to cut through the "BS" that normally surrounds these summits, and get to the truth! |
Then end of day 2 marks the end of the World Leaders summit as they jet back home and leave the rest of the work down to the negotiators.
Hear another debrief from me and Colin on BBC Radio 5 Live: The debriefs continue with Colin as we finish the end of day 3!
Talking about finance day, and thinking about whether this COP has truly done Youth engagement well... Rounding off week one, I chat to Colin Murray from BBC Radio 5 Live again to debrief over the days events.

On Times Radio with Kait Borsay (@KaitBorsay) discussing yet another U-turn from the Westminster Government, this time with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak revealing he will attend COP27 in Sharm El Sheik after pressure builds.
|
I've finally had enough of disposable vapes, and want to do something about it! Read the article to find out more...
|
Data suggests that 8.3% of adults in England, Wales and Scotland use vapes as they deliver nicotine in a similar way to cigarettes.
Now I wants to see people use rechargeable vapes and step away from the disposable options. Discarded disposable vaping products are made from three key parts including the battery, the pod and the coil. This means they can have devastating long-term climate impacts in Glasgow, as they last in the environment for years, according to Zero Waste Scotland. |
It was great to join BBC Radio Scotland presenter Cathy Macdonald discussing faith & ecology with Luke Devlin and Amanullah De Sondy. Turns out we've all got something to look to when it comes to religion and creation care and climate justice!

Clever About Cash - Cooking up a storm on a budget, BBC Radio Scotland

Eileen makes a visit to the Shettleston Community Growing Project in Glasgow and is joined by volunteer Mary, climate activist and zero waste advocate Laura Young, and Donna Borokinni, who works with the Glasgow Community Food Network as part of the Food and Climate Action project. They discuss building confidence in the kitchen and where we can look for meal inspiration.

Thank you to Habiba Katsha from the Huffington Post for writing this piece about the greenwashing sham that is the Pretty Little Thing new marketplace platform.

![]() A heated discussion from me and Will Webster with presenter of Times Radio Henry Bonsu as we look at potential future PM Liz Truss' plans to ramp up new oil and gas drilling to provide "energy security".

Dog poo bags. One of the WORST types of litter I have to pick up regularly, and something which cause a lot of environmental pollution and waste. Now there is a solution! Water-soluble bags from Project Harmless. Check out me speaking to the founder and BBC Radio Scotland to find out more.
|
Supermarket food labels could soon carry eco labels! New research from the University of Oxford has dived into the environmental impact of 57,000 items of food, looking at a holistic estimate for environmental impact.
Dr Mike Clark from the University of Oxford joined BBC Radio Scotland to discuss this new research, and some of the findings with listeners. Later in the show I joined presenters Laura and Gary to share my own thoughts about this breakthrough! |
Featured in BBC News - Climate change: More studies needed on possibility of human extinction.
"It is vital that we have research into all areas of climate change, including the scary reality of catastrophic events. This is because without the full truth, and all of the potential impacts, we won't make the informed choices we need, and we won't be driving climate action with enough pressure. For years climate change has been hidden, misinformed, and avoided and this has to stop now. Especially for the younger generations who are going to be left to deal with the consequences of years of pushing the earth to its limits." |
![]() On BBC RadioScotland with presenter Cathy MacDonald discussing Eco Anxiety alongside Bath University lecturer and Psychotherapist Caroline Hickman. Looking at the ways we discuss climate change with children and young people, and dive into the ways Eco Anxiety is prevalent in the general public, and what to do about it.

![]() Should the school curriculum have more climate content? I think so, and so does Scarlett, climate activist from Teach the Future who is campaigning for change. Hear part of my discussion on BBC 5 Live
with presenters Chris Warburton. |
![]() Looking after our clothes has never been more important as we all look to save a little money, and save our beloved fashion from going to waste!
Hear some of my thoughts on BBC Radio Scotland with fashion expert Dr Antoinette Fionda-Douglas and presenter Stephen Jardine during the call in. Top tips are: - only wash when you NEED, not after every wash as normal - use at home dyeing kits to spruce up items looking a little sad or stained - freezing jeans can remove odours like from cooking or bonfires - wash on low temps and low spin cycles |
![]() The new Scottish transport budget is out...and there is lots for active travel.
Hear some of my thoughts on BBC Radio Scotland with Stephen Jardine during the call in. Personally, I love the idea of more investment into active travel, helping people to choose walking and cycling over their cars. However, we need to make sure the investment is put in places of most need, done strategically, and done with lots of consultation. Where I live we've seen the downfall of when this goes wrong, with hundreds of thousands spent on cycling infrastructure which was then ripped up. Hear more in this clip! |
What are some of the small swaps we can make to green up our kitchen? Hear my thoughts on BBC Radio Scotland with Stephen Jardine. From avoiding cling film to finding reusable kitchen roll, there are lots of small steps we can take for a more sustainable home!
|
There were some great things to come out of Earth Day, and one partnership I loved was between Buyagift and Cool Earth. For every sustainable gift purchased (and all these gifts were experiences) 10% of profits went to support Cool Earth's work!
|
Great to be on BBC Radio Scotland with presenter Kaye Adams talking about the sustainability of working from home, versus in an office space.
In 2020, the International Energy Agency (IEA) found that for people who commute to work by car more than six kilometres (3.7 miles) one way, teleworking will lead to a reduction of emissions – despite the extra energy consumption due to them staying at home. |
What does the rising cost of fuel mean for everyday people, and for the planet? Hear my thoughts on BBC Radio Scotland with Stephen Jardine.
I would love people to be getting out of their cars and opting for more active and public transport, but only if there are better options out there. Right now we have people being forced out of their cars rather than having better choices. It would be good if people had something to go to (walking distance where they live or a bike with good cycling infrastructure, affordable, accessible, and reliable public transport), but right now we don’t have those options for people. I have an electric car, and find myself offering to drive group trips more often to help unburden others who are facing high petrol prices. |
The 1st of April marks a new Plastic Packaging Tax in the UK. From then businesses manufacturing or importing plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled materials will have to pay a £200 per tonne fee.
I jumped on BBC Radio Scotland with presenter Andrew Black to discuss my thoughts on whether this is enough! |

![]() Great to be on BBC Radio Scotland with presenter Kaye Adams and fashion writer Megan Rees to chat about how we can resell our old clothes, and do this in a sustainable way! Some great tips:
- take time out to look through your wardrobe; know what you have! - look around at the different platforms, and find one that works for you - send out clothes in reused packaging and try to avoid plastic - offset your carbon when mailing - drop off at a post office rather than door collection - it's a two way street; make sure you're also looking at buying "new" clothes from secondhand places too! |

|
![]() When we talk about single-use plastic tatt at Christmas, this John Lewis / Ginger Ray balloon tree is a perfect example of what we mean. With over 100 balloons for you to set up yourself for only one Christmas before being destined for landfill, this is the essence of single-use thoughtless design. Read my thoughts in The Times.
|
![]() The dreaded deadline for Christmas shopping is approached and with a long list still to tick, the only option might seem grabbing yet another questionable gadget that gets regularly binned. Hear a few thoughts from me alongside Tim Lord, Senior Fellow at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.

Wind farms, renewable energy, net zero, and Scottish Power Renewables. Earlier this year I had the opportunity to see ‘behind the scenes’ of the UK’s biggest onshore wind farm! Whitelee Wind Farm is just south of the Glasgow, and only 10 minutes from where I live. As a kid I watched this site being built, visited on a school trip, revisited during my university degree, and spent many many lockdown days walking around the site.

![]() Day 5 of COP26 was Youth and Empowerment...but this conference has been the least inclusive for young people globally, there has been a lot of youth-washing, and poor planning on the United Nations part meant a major clash in the programme with the strike. Here a few of my thoughts on STV news with Susan Ripoll. |
|
