The @mcs_uk British Beach Clean results are out! 🌎🌿
A massive 15,000 volunteers (double from last year) came along across the U.K. over the weekend in September to clean up 👏🏻
.It’s so interesting to see what the main polluters are and we should use this to target our bad habits! 🌿
I am shocked that the amount of litter in Scotland has gone up by 30% but luckily so has the number of volunteers by 80% Come of Scotland we must do better! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Check out all their stats from their recent post! 🌿

THIS IS WHY

This is why people cannot be trusted with disposable items. What a waste of a business ‘trying’ to do better offering a ‘green’ cup. First of all these ‘compostable’ cups are not doing what they are cracked up to do. They are not compostable in a bin or in your home systems, they need to be industrially composted which is just not available right now, especially at the scale needed. It is also definitely not going to breakdown on a pavement. Yes they are avoiding the old plastic-lined paper ones, but it’s honestly just creating a new problem. This is why we have REUSABLE cups. Take it, get a discount, enjoy your drink, wash it out, then REPEAT. No waste. No mess. No linear production. This is circular. This is better. And then there’s just the person that chucked this at the side of the road. Come on. Rage. This week needs to end and it’s Tuesday.

  • From @lush 💋 Freepost - Greenhub!
  • We are super excited to announce that you can now can pop your milk bottle tops in a box or envelope and drop it to your local Post Office with "Freepost LUSH GREENHUB" on the parcel (LUSH GREENHUB has to be in capitals!)🌿
  •     It'll then go straight to our lovely Green Hub crew to be recycled, upcycled and all sorts of wonderful things 🙌🏻
  •     If you're closer to a Post Office than a local store then this might be a better option for you! 🥰

DID YOU KNOW?

Always try to refuse single use plastics ✋🏼, but sometimes they’re just impossible to avoid 😩
So when you have no other option here’s a guide for consuming in the “most sustainable” and recyclable way: .
  •     When picking up something wrapped in plastic always look for the number symbol that ranges from 1-7 within the recycling triangle ♻️.
  •     Numbers 2, 4 and 5 are considered the “safest” in terms of plastic leaching - so foods you consume wrapped in these plastics shouldn’t cause too much harm (foods in no plastic are always best of course!😉) .
  •     Numbers 3, 6 and 7 are the most harmful 💀
  •     Plastic #1: PETE/PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) Can only be used once as a lot of bacteria can accumulate and cause plastic leaching 😪 It’s most commonly used for water bottles/drinks and food containers 🥤 Which is why it’s always best to refuse this type of plastic and use your REUSABLES instead!
  •     Plastic #2: HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) Has one of the lower risks of leaching and is more of a “heavy duty” plastic used for household cleaning products, shampoo bottles, milk jugs etc. It can be recycled but not fully! .
  •     Plastic #3: PVC (Vinyl) Is one of the worst plastic choices! It can’t be recycled easily and contains TONS of toxins (including carcinogens 😵!) that leach easily. Definitely refuse this plastic as it should not be reused. Most commonly used for food wrap 🥒
  •     Plastic #4: LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) Very reusable, but normally not recyclable ☹️ Used mostly for plastic bags, so ALWAYS bring your reusable bags with you!🛍
  •     Plastic #5: PP (Polypropylene) Reusable but not always recyclable, some centres are beginning to accept it though! Usually used for yoghurt containers, take-away containers, medicine bottles and disposable diapers 🤱🏻
  •     Plastic #6: PS (Polystyrene) Is styrofoam which is extremely difficult to recycle and contains several nasty chemicals 😷 that are proven to be harmful to human health. Often used for takeaway boxes and cups. .
  •     Plastic #7: Others - Recycling/reusing guidelines are still relatively unclear. Number 7 plastics also contain BPA 😓 Always avoid this one!

EVERY MORNING THIS IS GOLD

21/11/2018

This might not look like luxury. But every morning this is gold. For over a year I was waking up and having oats and water for breakfast because I refused to buy milk in plastic bottles, or use alternatives which were worse for the environment. But now - milk in glass bottles. This is just a simple post to talk about how personally I sacrifice the things I like because of the environment, but I am always hopeful that an alternative comes around (which it did). This is probably the most #firstworldproblems post ever; cries over lack of milk in the morning. I’m just showing that some of my zerowaste journey has been a total fail and ended up with me cutting out stuff completely. However I am hopeful with so many bulk food stores and more people waking up to the environmental crisis we’re in that more and more solutions keep popping up to avoid plastic and live more for the environment! Yawn - I’m going back to bed - I’m SO not a morning person.

“A lot about being environmental is actually just about taking the time out and thinking, being a bit more prepared and actually once you’ve got the resources and once you’ve figured it out it is super easy.”
